As a general rule you will want to use 1 hinge per every 30 inches of door or fraction thereof.

Doors over 60 inches but not over 90 inches need to use 3 hinges. For a standard internal door its door lock is normally 42 from the floor to the centre of the latch. Doors up to 60 inches need 2 hinges. Standard interior door height is 80 inches.

Because gravity works on a door in this way hinges are placed on the high side with the bottom hinge 10 inches from the bottom of the door and the top one 5 inches from the top of the door.
